Wimbledon 2022 champion Elena Rybakina has come to the defense of her coach Stefano Vukov, who is reportedly under investigation by the WTA for alleged breaches of its code of conduct.
Vukov, who guided Rybakina to her Wimbledon triumph, has been provisionally suspended, according to The Athletic. The publication stated that complaints about Vukov’s behavior described it as “intense and at times harsh.” Vukov has denied any wrongdoing, saying, “Definitely never abused anyone.”
Following Kazakhstan’s semi-final defeat to Poland in the United Cup, Rybakina, the world number six, reiterated her support for Vukov.
“He never mistreated me or anything like that,” Rybakina said. “Stefano is rejoining the team because I’ve known him for six years and have respect for everything he has done from the very beginning.”
Although unhappy with the investigation, Rybakina confirmed her desire to bring Vukov back into her team.
Focus Shifts to Australian Open
The controversy emerges as Rybakina prepares for the Australian Open, which begins on January 12. Despite losing to Poland’s world number two Iga Swiatek 7-6(5), 6-4 in the United Cup, Rybakina remains focused on the year’s first Grand Slam.
The WTA has yet to release an official statement on the investigation, leaving Vukov’s status uncertain as the tournament approaches.
