Ecuadorian footballer Pedro Perlaza has been safely rescued after being kidnapped over the weekend, Ecuador’s National Police confirmed on Wednesday. The 32-year-old defender, who plays for top-tier club Delfin and has been capped three times by the national team, was abducted alongside a friend in the coastal city of Esmeraldas.
The two men were freed after police located the rural property where they were being held, thanks to investigative efforts by the Anti-Kidnapping and Extortion Unit (UNASE).
“The property… was checked to secure the victims and return them to their families safe and sound,” read the police statement.
Details of the Incident
Perlaza and his friend, identified as Juan M., were reportedly taken after attending a party in Esmeraldas. This northwestern region has been increasingly plagued by violence, reflecting a broader surge in crime across Ecuador.
Perlaza’s Football Legacy
Perlaza played a key role in Ecuador’s 2022 World Cup qualifying campaign, starting crucial matches against Colombia and Peru. His contributions helped the national team secure a place in the Qatar tournament.
Rising Crime in Ecuador
The incident underscores the growing security challenges in Ecuador. The country recorded over 7,000 violent deaths in 2023, a staggering 65% increase from the previous year, driven by organized crime and gang violence.
While the successful rescue operation brings relief to Perlaza’s family and fans, it also highlights the urgent need to address the escalating violence affecting the nation.
