Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid has been handed a three-game suspension without pay after an altercation with a journalist. The incident involved Embiid and a Philadelphia Inquirer columnist whose recent article was critical of Embiid, referencing both his young son and his late brother. The NBA emphasized that while athletes may feel deeply affected by personal commentary, physical confrontations cannot be tolerated.
NBA executive Joe Dumars reinforced that maintaining “mutual respect” is essential between players and the media, underscoring the league’s expectation for professionalism in all interactions. Embiid’s suspension will commence at the next available game he is eligible to play.
The reigning MVP has been sidelined for Philadelphia’s opening six games as he manages recovery from knee surgery. During his absence, the 76ers have struggled, posting a 1-5 record, including a narrow 118-116 loss to the Phoenix Suns.
76ers coach Nick Nurse noted that he has been in regular communication with Embiid, encouraging him to stay mentally engaged with the team’s plans. While Nurse mentioned that Embiid is becoming more involved with team activities, a specific return date remains uncertain.
