Manchester United has parted ways with Erik ten Hag after a challenging season start, which saw the team secure just one win in their last eight games and slide to 14th in the Premier League. The Dutch manager, who joined United in April 2022, led the club to notable successes, including a Carabao Cup win in 2023 and an FA Cup victory in 2024, but was ultimately unable to establish consistent league dominance. His departure comes amidst growing pressures on the team and increasing scrutiny following a series of underwhelming performances.

United announced that former player Ruud van Nistelrooy will step in as interim manager, supported by the current coaching staff, until a long-term successor is appointed. Despite Ten Hag’s early promise, including a third-place finish in his debut season and the club’s first trophy since 2017, mounting injuries and a lackluster start this season ultimately led to his dismissal.

A recent 2-1 defeat to West Ham and ongoing struggles in the Europa League, where United have drawn all three matches, underscored the team’s struggles. Last season, despite a rocky league performance that saw United finish eighth, Ten Hag secured a contract extension through 2026, backed by British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe’s new involvement in football operations.

While Ten Hag’s tenure had moments of success, including a memorable FA Cup final win over rivals Manchester City, United now look to rebuild under new leadership as they aim to reestablish their position among England’s top clubs.
