RB Leipzig attacker Xavi Simons is set to be sidelined for several weeks due to an ankle injury sustained during the team’s 1-0 Champions League loss to Liverpool. The 21-year-old was forced off the pitch in the 73rd minute and had to be helped off by Leipzig’s coaching staff. German reports suggest Simons, who is on loan from Paris Saint-Germain, could be out until the new year.
Leipzig confirmed that Simons suffered a ligament injury in his left ankle, with the treatment plan still under discussion. Leipzig coach Marco Rose described Simons as being in “a fair bit of pain” following the incident.
Simons has been in strong form this season, contributing two goals and an assist in seven Bundesliga matches. Leipzig, currently level on points with Bayern Munich but trailing on goal difference, will face third-placed Freiburg in a crucial league clash on Saturday.
