Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder expressed deep shock and grief on Friday following the tragic death of his former player, George Baldock. The 31-year-old England-born Greece international drowned in a swimming pool at his home in Glyfada, Athens, earlier this week.
Baldock, who had recently transferred to Greek club Panathinaikos after seven years at Sheffield United, was a key figure during his time at Bramall Lane, particularly under Wilder’s leadership. Wilder, who rejoined Sheffield United last December, shared his sorrow in a heartfelt tribute, saying, “Everybody’s just absolutely stunned and numb really. It’s just tragic.” He emphasized Baldock’s importance to the team, both as a player and as a person, describing him as a “huge personality” who embodied the club’s culture.
Sheffield United owner Prince Abdullah and chairman Yusuf Giansiracusa also offered their condolences, stating, “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, as well as his friends and all who knew him, not least the Sheffield United family.”
Baldock, known affectionately as “Starman” by fans, was instrumental in Sheffield United’s promotion to the Premier League in 2019. He represented Greece 12 times, qualifying through his grandmother, and was recently part of their squad during the Euro 2024 play-offs.
Greece’s national team paid tribute to Baldock during their 2-1 Nations League victory over England on Thursday, holding up a shirt bearing his name after their first goal. Greece midfielder Dimitrios Pelkas revealed the emotional toll on the team, saying, “We will never forget him,” and acknowledged that they played in his honor, despite their grief.
