LOSC Lille pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the UEFA Champions League, defeating 15-time winners Real Madrid 1-0 on matchday two. This crucial victory secured Lille’s eighth win in their last nine European home games, leaving Real Madrid with plenty to ponder after a lackluster performance.

Despite a strong start to their Champions League campaign with a 3-1 win over Stuttgart, Real Madrid struggled to break down Lille’s resilient defense. Early in the match, Jude Bellingham won the ball for Vinicius Junior, whose fierce shot was denied by Lille’s goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier. Lille responded quickly, with Jonathan David forcing a brilliant double save from Andriy Lunin as they began piling on pressure.

Lille’s breakthrough came right before halftime when a handball by Eduardo Camavinga led to a penalty. David confidently slotted home from the spot, sending Lunin the wrong way to put Lille 1-0 ahead.

Real Madrid failed to create any real chances in the second half, and despite Carlo Ancelotti bringing on Kylian Mbappe, they struggled to find a way back into the game. Antonio Rudiger came closest for Real in the 85th minute, but his header was cleared off the line by Tiago Santos.

Lille’s defense held firm, with Chevalier making a crucial late save to deny Luka Modric, sealing a historic win for the French side in their first-ever meeting with Real Madrid.
