Graham Arnold has stepped down as coach of Australia’s national soccer team, the Socceroos, after a poor start to their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign. Football Australia announced Arnold’s decision on Friday, following a shock 1-0 home defeat to Bahrain and a goalless draw against Indonesia that left Australia with just one point from two matches in the third round of qualifiers.
Arnold, who had led the Socceroos since 2018, said, “After careful consideration, I believe it’s time for fresh leadership.” His departure follows mounting pressure, especially after Australia squandered multiple scoring chances in their recent draw, despite 19 attempts on goal.
Arnold’s tenure included guiding Australia to the round of 16 in the 2022 World Cup, where they gave eventual champions Argentina a tough fight before losing 2-1. His six-year stint also saw Australia set a FIFA record by winning 11 consecutive World Cup qualifying matches. Football Australia now seeks an interim coach ahead of crucial matches against China and Japan.
