Republic of Ireland captain Seamus Coleman has been ruled out of Tuesday’s Nations League match against Greece due to an injury sustained in the recent 2-0 defeat to England. The 35-year-old was substituted in the second half after suffering a knock to his left ankle when England’s Harry Maguire landed on him during an aerial challenge. Coleman will return to his club, Everton, for recovery.

Coleman’s absence sees Festy Ebosele, on loan at Watford from Udinese, called up to the squad. With Coleman out, Matt Doherty may shift from his wing-back role to strengthen the defence. The match against Greece will be crucial for Ireland as they look to recover from their disappointing loss under new manager Heimir Hallgrimsson, who will seek his first win after Saturday’s setback.
