Real Madrid midfielder Eduardo Camavinga is set to miss Wednesday’s UEFA Super Cup clash against Atalanta, as well as the start of the season, after suffering a knee injury during training. The 21-year-old France international twisted his knee at the Warsaw National Stadium on Tuesday when he caught his studs in the ground and collided with teammate Aurelien Tchouameni.

A scan revealed that Camavinga had sprained the collateral ligament in his left knee, Real Madrid confirmed on Wednesday. Although the club did not specify a recovery timeline, reports suggest that Camavinga could be sidelined for up to seven weeks. This is a significant blow for the young midfielder, who was a key player for Real Madrid last season, featuring in 46 matches across all competitions as the team secured both the La Liga title and the Champions League.

Real Madrid will face the 2024 Europa League champions, Atalanta, in the Super Cup, but will have to do so without Camavinga’s services. The match is set to take place in Poland, where all eyes will also be on Kylian MbappĂ©, who is expected to make his competitive debut for the club following his high-profile transfer from Paris Saint-Germain.

In addition to missing the Super Cup, Camavinga’s injury means he is unlikely to be available for Real Madrid’s La Liga opener against Mallorca at the Bernabeu on August 18. The club will need to adjust their midfield strategy as they begin their campaign to defend their La Liga title.
