United States captain Tyler Adams will miss the beginning of the Premier League season as he recovers from back surgery, Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola confirmed. Adams, who struggled with a hamstring injury last season, ended his debut Bournemouth campaign with back spasms.
The 25-year-old midfielder played the full game for the U.S. in a 1-0 loss to Uruguay at the Copa America on July 1, but underwent surgery two days later. Iraola stated, “He is out for some time. It is difficult to say how long, but he won’t be fit for the start of the season. But September? October? I don’t know.”
When questioned why Bournemouth didn’t prevent Adams from international duty, Iraola explained that the decision was not up to the club. “It is a decision for the nations, who are allowed to select players, and he wanted to play thinking the injury would get better but he felt it was getting worse,” he told the BBC.
Adams joined Bournemouth last summer from Leeds. Bournemouth will play an exhibition match against Wrexham on Saturday in Santa Barbara, with their Premier League season opener set for August 17 at Nottingham Forest.
