England’s quest to end 58 years of disappointment ended in failure as they were beaten by Spain in the Euro 2024 final at Berlin’s Olympiastadion. Gareth Southgate’s side was sunk by Mikel Oyarzabal’s late goal, leaving England heartbroken once again in a second successive European Championship final and extending their long wait for success.

Spain took the lead two minutes after the break when young star wingers Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams combined, with Williams beating England keeper Jordan Pickford with a powerful low finish.

England captain Harry Kane struggled and was substituted on the hour mark. Cole Palmer, brought on for Kobbie Mainoo, raised hopes of a comeback with a composed left-foot strike in the 73rd minute.

However, Spain snatched the win four minutes from time when Oyarzabal slid home Marc Cucurella’s cross, leaving England as the nearly men once more.
