In a dramatic twist at Euro 2024, the Netherlands staged a stunning comeback to defeat Turkey and secure a place in the semi-finals against England. The Dutch equalized with an own goal from Mert Muldur, who inadvertently sent the ball over the line under pressure from Cody Gakpo, after trailing at halftime.

Turkey initially took the lead with a deserved goal by centre-back Samet Akaydin, who expertly headed in Arda Guler’s precise cross, showcasing an impressive first-half performance. In celebration, Akaydin ran to the Turkish supporters, kissed his badge, and knelt in prayer, while the substitutes charged down the touchline to join him.

However, Turkey’s celebrations were short-lived as the Netherlands, revitalized after a lackluster first half, came back strongly in the second half, thanks to substitute Wout Weghorst. Stefan de Vrij’s header found the back of the net to equalize, just moments after Weghorst’s crucial defensive play prevented Turkey’s Kaan Ayhan from seizing a rebound.

Turkey nearly extended their lead when Real Madrid’s Guler struck a brilliant free-kick that hit the post, but they failed to capitalize on their opportunities.

The victory sets up a thrilling semi-final clash for Ronald Koeman’s team against England in Dortmund on Wednesday at 20:00 BST. The winner will advance to the final to face either France or Spain.
