Luka Doncic starred as the Dallas Mavericks edged out the Minnesota Timberwolves, 108-105, in the opening game of the NBA’s Western Conference Finals. The Slovenian standout scored a game-high 33 points, including 15 in the final quarter, to help the Mavericks secure the first advantage in the best-of-seven series.
Kyrie Irving also made a significant contribution for Dallas, scoring 30 points, with 24 of them coming in the first half in Minneapolis. “We had to work really hard to get this one,” said Doncic. “I think we’re known for losing game ones, so we were trying to make a point. But it’s only one and we have three more [wins] to go.”
The final quarter was a nail-biter, with both teams exchanging leads multiple times. Anthony Edwards’ 24-foot three-pointer gave the Timberwolves a 102-98 lead with just under four minutes left. However, the Mavericks responded with eight unanswered points, including a crucial step-back jump shot from Doncic, to regain the lead and secure the victory.
Jaden McDaniels led the Timberwolves with 24 points, while Edwards added 19. The Timberwolves’ Karl-Anthony Towns contributed 18 points to their effort.
Game two is set to take place on Friday in Minneapolis.
